Turkish Americans Elected to Prestigious National Academy of Engineering

Turkish American engineers Dr. Birol Dindoruk , Dr. Ali Dogru, and Dr. Selda Gulsen were elected to the elected to the National Academy of Engineering (NAE) at the beginning of February 2017 in addition to Dr. Mehmet Toner.

Dr. Birol Dindoruk

Dr. Birol Dindoruk was elected to the NAE “for significant theoretical and practical contributions to enhanced oil recovery and CO2 sequestration.” He is a Team Leader for PVT/Reservoir Fluid Characterization at Shell International E&P. Dr. Dindoruk is also an adjunct faculty member at the University of Houston and a consulting professor at Stanford University. He holds a PhD from Stanford University in petroleum engineering with a minor in Mathematics and an MBA from the University of Houston. In January 2017, he became the Editor-in-Chief for the Journal of Natural Gas Science and Engineering .

Dr. Ali Dogru

Dr. Ali Dogru was elected to the NAE "for the development of high-performance computing in hydrocarbon reservoir simulation." He is a Saudi Aramco Fellow and Chief Technologist at Saudi Aramco's EXPEC Advanced Research Center. He is internationally renowned in his field, having published hundreds of technical papers and earning a number of U.S. patents. In July 2012, he received the prestigious selection as MIT Visiting Scientist, where he regularly delivers courses. Dr. Dogru holds a PhD in Petroleum Engineering from the University of Texas at Austin.

Dr. Selda Gunsel

Dr. Selda Gunsel was elected to the NAE "for leadership in developing and manufacturing advanced fuels and lubricants to meet growing global energy demands while reducing CO2 admissions". She is the General Manager for Royal Dutch Shell's Global Lubricants Supply Chain. Dr. Gunsel has served as both the President of the Society of Tribologists and Lubrication Engineers (STLE) and as the Chairman of the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) Lubricants Research Award Board. She holds a PhD in Chemical Engineering from Penn State University.

Election to the NAE is among the highest professional distinctions accorded to an engineer. Academy membership honors those who have made outstanding contributions to "engineering research, practice, or education, including, where appropriate, significant contributions to the engineering literature," and to "the pioneering of new and developing fields of technology, making major advancements in traditional fields of engineering, or developing/implementing innovative approaches to engineering education."

Individuals in the newly elected class will be formally inducted during a ceremony at the NAE’s annual meeting in Washington, DC on October 8, 2017. Total membership in the NAE includes 2,281 U.S. members and 249 foreign members.
