Turkish American scientist Ali Erdemir has been elected a member of the National Academy of Engineering (NAE) for his contributions to the science and technology of friction, lubrication, and wear. He is an Argonne National Laboratory (ANL) Distinguished Fellow, Senior Scientist, and Program Lead for Materials for Harsh Conditions.
Dr. Erdemir is among the 86 new members and 18 foreign members that will be formally inducted during a ceremony at the NAE's annual meeting in Washington, D.C., on October 6, 2019. Election to the NAE is among the highest professional distinctions accorded to an engineer. Academy membership honors those who have made outstanding contributions and innovations in engineering research, practice, and education.
Erdemir has received international recognition in the fields of materials science, mechanical engineering, surface engineering and tribology, nano-structured and -composite materials, physical and chemical vapor deposition, superlubricity, surface science and engineering, diamond and diamond-like carbon films, engine tribology, low-dimensional materials and related disciplines. He holds 6 research and development (R&D 100) awards, 23 U.S. patents; and has published more than 300 papers.
