Turkey was the fourth-largest donor of humanitarian assistance last year, according to the annual report released by Global Humanitarian Assistance (GHA).
The GHA report says that Turkey contributed more than $1bn (or, 0.13%) of its national income in 2012. Much of the humanitarian aid provided by Turkey is likely to have been spent on housing Syrian refugees, the report says. Currently, Turkey is hosting close to half a million refugees from Syria.
According to the report, the United States remained the largest donor by volume, providing $3.8 bn, which amounted to 29% of all humanitarian assistance provided by governments. Second on the list was EU institutions, contributing $ 1.9 bn. The third largest donor was the United Kingdom, providing $1.2 bn.
