TCA Accepting Applications for 2019 Turkish American Youth Leadership Congress

The applications for the  2019 Annual Turkish American Youth Leadership Congress are now open. This year’s TCA Youth Congress will be held between October 24-27, 2019 in Washington, D.C.

Students and young professionals of Turkish American heritage are encouraged to apply. The deadline to apply is Friday, September 13, 2019.

TCA Washington Summer Internship Program Continues

As part of the Washington Summer Intern Program, TCA hosted its annual Summer Intern Orientation at its Washington, D.C. office on July 10. Interns gathered for a day of briefings about TCA, the Turkish Cultural Foundation (TCF), the Turkish American Legal Defense Fund (TALDF), The Turkish American community, and political activism and engagement in the U.S.

July 12, the interns attended a tour of the Turkish collection at the Library of Congress, led by Joan S. Weeks, Assistant Chief and Turkish Specialist at the African and Middle East Division.

July 19, TCA interns visited an exhibition titled "Infinite Space" by Turkish American artist Refik Anadol at DC Artechouse. Anadol was a TCF Cultural Exchange Fellow in 2013.

July 23, TCA interns attended an event with Congressman Steve Chabot, (R-OH/1st), a Co-Chair of the Congressional Caucus on the U.S.-Turkey Relations and Turkish Americans.

July 23, the interns attended a tour and career panel at the U.S. Department of State.

TCA Attends Events with Members of Congress

July 10, TCA President G. Lincoln McCurdy attended an NRCC briefing with Chairman Tom Emmer (MN/6th) and Rep. Sean Duffy (WI/7th).

July 12-14, McCurdy attended the National Republican Congressional Committee's (NRCC) Annual Summer Meeting at the Nemacolin Woodlands Resort in Farmington, PA. He spoke with several representatives, including Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (CA/23rd) and NRCC Chairman Tom Emmer (MN/6th), about U.S.-Turkey relations and issues important to Turkish Americans.

July 12-13, TCA Directors Nilsu Goren and Louette Ragusa attended the Congressional Hispanic Caucus' Bold PAC Summer Retreat in Cambridge, MD. They spoke with Chairman Tony Cardenas (D-CA/29th) and Reps. Pete Aguilar (D-CA/31st), Gil Cisneros (D-CA/39th), and Susan Wild (D-PA/7th).

July 16-17, McCurdy and the new TUSIAD President Simone Kaslowski met with Reps. Adam Kinzinger (R-IL/16th), Alex Mooney (R-WV/2nd), and Mike Waltz (R-FL/6th).

July 16, McCurdy attended a luncheon hosted by Rep. Mike Turner (R-OH/10th), who serves on House Armed Services Committee.

July 18, McCurdy attended a luncheon hosted by Rep. Mike Waltz (R-FL/6th) of the House Armed Services Committee.

July 23, Goren attended a meeting with Rep. John Joyce (R-PA/13th) organized by the Government Relations Association (GRA).

July 24, McCurdy and Goren met with Rep. Elaine Luria (D-VA/2nd) of the House Armed Services Committee. Goren attended a luncheon with Rep. Michael McCaul (R-TX/10th), the Ranking Minority Member on House Foreign Affairs Committee, and Rep. Dan Crenshaw (R-TX/2nd).

July 25, McCurdy attended a lunch hosted by Rep. Alex Mooney (R-WV/2nd) with special guest Rep. Blaine Luetkemeyer (R-MO/3rd). Goren attended a GRA luncheon with Rep. Glenn Thompson (R-PA/15th).

July 26, McCurdy and Goren attended a lunch with Rep. Ruben Gallego (D-AZ/7th) of the House Armed Services Committee.

TCA Alumni Spotlight

Originally from Louisville, Kentucky, Crystal Staebell is a recent graduate of American University in Washington D.C. where she studied international relations and political science. Crystal interned at various organizations, including TCA, the Cato Institute, and the US Chamber of Commerce, while volunteering for Youth For Understanding.

In 2017, Crystal was a delegate at the TCA Turkish American Youth Leadership Congress. As part of TCA's 2019 Washington Summer Internship Program, she has been interning at the Center for the Study of the Presidency and Congress (CSPC). In Fall 2019, she will start her master's degree in International Relations at Bogazici University in Istanbul.
