TCA Commemorates Lasting Legacy of Mustafa Kemal Ataturk

On November 10th, TCA paid tribute to the legacy of Mustafa Kemal Ataturk, who led the Turkish National War of Liberation, founded the modern Republic of Turkey and launched an extraordinary series of reforms that continue to inspire the Turkish nation. In the words of Scottish historian, Patrick Balfour (the 3rd Baron Kinross): "the soldier in Ataturk had saved his country, the statesman in him had won for it the honorable peace, the reformer in him was now to make of it a new country." TCA Celebrates 29th Anniversary of the TRNC

On November 19, TCA attended the 29th anniversary reception of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) organized by the TRNC Representative Office in Washington DC. The reception was attended by the Turkish Ambassador to the US, H.E. Namık Tan, as well as by Turkish diplomats, legislative staff from the US Congress, Turkish Cypriots, and many friends of the TRNC.

The TRNC was proclaimed on November 15, 1983, Rauf Raif Denktaş being the first president. Despite the fact that Turkish Cypriots overwhelmingly voted "yes" for the Annan Plan in 2004, a U.N. sponsored peace plan aimed at solving the decades long Cyprus problem, severe embargoes and restrictions exist in almost all areas in the life of the Turkish Cypriots. TCA Sponsors Congressional Visits for TUSIAD Delegation

On December 4th, TCA sponsored two visits with members of Congress for the Turkish Industry and Business Association (TUSIAD) delegation, which arrived to Washington DC for talks on U.S.-Turkey relations. The delegation met with leaders from the Europe and Eurasia Subcommittee of theHouse Committee on Foreign Affairs and later attended a reception hosted byCongresswoman Virginia Foxx, Co-Chair of the Turkey Caucus. TCA and Turkish Embassy Celebrate Native American Heritage Month

On November 26, Turkish Ambassador Namik Tan hosted for the second year in a row a reception celebrating Native American Heritage Month. The event was co-hosted by TCA, National Congress of American Indians (NCAI), and National AmericanIndian Housing Council (NAIHC) with support from the Turkish Industry and Business Association (TUSIAD). Sevin Elekdag, Research Fellow at the Turkish Coalition of America and Metodija A. Koloski, President of the United Macedonian Diaspora (UMD) wrote an opinion piece calling on the  international community to sanction Greece for abetting the rise of Golden Dawn and for injustices against immigrants and citizens of non-Greek origin. The article entitled "The US Can Help End Extremism in Greece" was published in The Hill's Foreign Affairs Blog on November 6thIt was also featured in the USCIRF Daily Digest of November 14th.
